InnovMetric’s first products were developed from the pioneering research work of co-founder Dr. Marc Soucy, who has earned an excellent reputation for his innovative research work in point cloud alignment, meshing, and polygonal decimation. In 1992, Dr. Soucy published the first known method for meshing point clouds of complex objects into polygonal models. Since then, his recognized work has inspired researchers worldwide.

In 1994, InnovMetric released its first product, IMCompress, which was considered by many to be the best polygon reduction algorithm for detailed surface triangulations. IMCompress eventually evolved into IMEdit/IMCompress, a complete polygon editing and reduction toolbox that provides several complementary reduction methods for various types of polygonal models.

In 1996, InnovMetric launched the first release of its point cloud processing solution, PolyWorks. In its early versions, PolyWorks was used to create accurate polygons from digitized point clouds. PolyWorks has been used for diverse applications, such as creating a virtual museum of color artifacts (in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Research Council of Canada), modeling human bodies, creating 3D digital reproductions of archeological sites, generating polygonal models of artists’ works, and several other R&D projects.

In 2000, InnovMetric launched the first release of PolyWorks/Inspector™, its powerful software solution that uses high-density point clouds for quality-control and inspection processes. PolyWorks/Inspector is now the most widely spread point cloud inspection solution among car manufacturers and tier-one suppliers worldwide.

Since 2000, InnovMetric has been working in close collaboration with surveyors and global scanner manufacturers, applying its vast experience in processing very large point clouds to meet the specific needs of the surveying community. Today, surveyors and engineers using PolyWorks in their daily work benefit from outstanding scan alignment, geo-referencing, measurement, feature extraction, and visualization capabilities to produce survey-accurate results and to efficiently deliver valuable extracted elements to downstream software suites such as AutoCAD® and MicroStation®.

In 2004, PolyWorks licenses are at work in more than 30 countries, benefiting users in surveying such as Bohannan Huston, Lamp Rynearson & Associates, Mississippi DOT, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Stewart Weir & Co, USA National Ground Intelligence, UK Environmental Agency, and Woolpert LLP with the most complete, accurate, and robust 3D point cloud processing software solution on the market.

Celebrating its 10th year of point cloud software development in 2004, InnovMetric is looking forward to continuing offering groundbreaking innovations that meet the needs of the surveying community, while keeping its focus on the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of its software tools.
