PolyWorks’ capabilities are tailored to the needs of surveyors in the field of open-pit mining, allowing:
• Accurate scan alignment using the geometrical shape of the scene, with no need for field targets.
• Easy geo-referencing of the entire point cloud using a minimum of three known points in the real-world coordinate system, or three known scanner positions
• Automatic extraction of relevant features, such as terrain profiles and contours, which can be exported to DXF, IGES, and imported to DGN.
• Quick extraction of multiple measurements, such as distances, angles, radii, volume and more.
• Visualization of scanned scenes using colored point clouds or colored polygonal models.

Digitizing an open-pit mine

• PolyWorks combines point matching and a powerful best-fit alignment method to align scans using the geometrical shape of the scene.
• No field targets are required for the alignment. However, markers can be used in the scene to validate the alignment results.

Three aligned scans

The aligned point cloud is geo-referenced in “local” mine coordinates using a minimum of three known point coordinates The geo-referencing consists in matching the target points in the scene to their corresponding GPS points

Various measurements can be taken directly on point clouds or on polygonal models, such as:

• Distances (horizontal, vertical, slope)
• Angles (bearing, azimuth)
• Radii
• Volumes

Horizontal distance between two selected points Vertical distance of an open-pit mine
(200.130 Meters)

PolyWorks offers automatic and interactive tools to extract valuable features directly on the point cloud such as:

• Cross-sections (e.g. profile and contour lines)
• Colored boundaries (e.g. coal seam)
• Sharp edges
• Feature lines
• And more.

Export of Extracted Features

• All features extracted in PolyWorks can be exported to DXF and IGES
• Extracted features can also be directly imported into MicroStation V7 and V8
• User-defined Feature Codes and Layer Names can be used in the export process
• PolyWorks also generates reports in Excel, Word, and HTML

NB : If needed, all features can also be directly extracted on polygonal models
